real vituality.

raising awareness of the impact technology has on our lives i decided to look into the cuts that lincoln city council are making with the cctv in the centre. teaching myself cinema 4d and post-production editing in after effects i created this motion graphic to add impact to the debate.

we purchased two 90cm satellite dishes in hopes that we could create a working prototype of the installation. unfortunately after they arrived we worked out the maths and discovered that satellite dishes actually spread the sound outwards, instead of in a direct line as it should.

still using the dishes as a visual prototype we attempted to cover them in a reflective silver vinyl. after many attempts we just couldn’t achieve a smooth finish because of the high plastic content in this vinyl. we then opted to use a matte white vinyl because of its clean and crisp look.

Queen’s English - Making of Documentary

queen’s english.

my response to the language brief was developed from the phrase, ‘did you swallow a dictionary for breakfast’. looking at the packaging of different cereal brands I selected crunchy nut cornflakes because of its history. many people would be interested to learn that this particular brand has been on the market for more than 30years, but its popularity only grew in the past few. in contrast, the queen’s english is becoming increasingly uncommon and corrupted.

every element of the original packaging has been altered, from the title to the nutritional information and even the barcode, which when scanned reads ‘queens english’. printed on vinyl, matte sealed and then mounted onto a thin card it could then but cut and folded into shape.

sound installation.

road trip to snibston discovery centre in coalville, leicestershire to take a look at some working examples of parabolic sound reflectors. using a sound monitor we took some recordings showing that the reflectors magnified a whisper from 10m away to 70db plus.

sound installation testing continued.

myself and my project partner sam decided to test different materials and techniques to produce our own parabolic sound reflectors. we have tried thick card, papier mache and polymorph, a mouldable plastic. we created two papier mache dishes, one using pva glue and the other flour and water, however both tended to lose their form when they dried. the most succesful attempt was using the polymorph, but to increase the curvature of the dish we thought it would be a good idea to place it onto a bowl and heat it up, unfortunately ending up with something that more resembles a hat than a parabolic reflector. if something works, then leave it alone!

working with sam redgrift, we found some parabolic shaped objects to test our sound reflection installation idea. covering them in tin foil increased the amount of sound reflected. we also made a small template out of card.
